Trek
Do Justice, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly
The Trek theme is a big favorite for a lot of people… And sometimes it's referred to as the "Do Justice" theme, for obvious reasons. The theme echoes Micah 6:8
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
The crazy pattern is what really defined this theme. The hand-drawn aesthetic and the dizzying array of icons were a reflection of the surf, skate, and snowboard culture of the times. Astute observers will note that some of the drawing appear to be done by children…
The Trek bag was a messenger style bag with the front flap having a swath of the crazy pattern silk-screened on it, and then a big white section where we encouraged students to make it their own. Sharpies were included with the MA Gear for this purpose.
Two different shirts were offered. One featured the "Do Justice" graphics on a white garment. The other highlighted "Love Mercy" on a bright red tee. The tension between justice and mercy was illustrated using both distressed, grungy, beat up lettering juxtaposed with fine, artistic, calligraphic lettering. This dynamism gives the theme life and relevance even ten years later. Two other shirts were designed for staff featuring the phrase, "Walk Humbly"
